Advanced Pattern Recognition and Visual Imaging

University of Wales Crest

Over the past three decades computer graphics, visualization, and imaging technologies have played a growing role in adding value to a wide variety of medical applications. Today, a variety of imaging modalities are in common use by the medical profession for diagnostic purposes, and these modalities provide a rich source of data for further processing using computer graphics and imaging techniques. Applications include medical diagnosis, procedures training, pre-operative planning, telemedicine, and many more.

Advances in pattern recognition have accompanied and assisted the developments of medical visual aids all the way. Analysis and classification of MRI, ultrasound, mammograms and cervical smear images are a few examples where an extremely high precision of the decision is imperative. Further developments in pattern recognition and machine learning are provoked and put back to the test through the variety of challenging problems arising from medical imaging.

The purpose will be to explore prospective directions for collaboration between the Computer Vision Centre, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the School of Informatics, UWB. Thus the seminar is not intended to present the state-of-the-art of the whole area but to outline as broadly as possible the expertise available within the two groups.

All are welcome. Tea, coffee and sandwiches will be provided.
